Wednesday MLB Best Bet: Reds vs. Phillies

Roy Halladay

The Phillies and Reds will meet up in our MLB best bet for Wednesday.

We have hit our last two straight plays and hope that Wednesday’s MLB best bet between the Philadelphia Phillies (29-19) and the Cincinnati Reds (26-23) can continue the recent hot streak that has lasted for the better part of two months.  The Phillies are at home today and the online sportsbooks have Philadelphia as large -200 home favorites.  Cincinnati has amassed just an 11-12 record on the road this year and will be dealing with a Philadelphia squad that is 17-10 at home.

The reason that the Phillies are such big favorites today is because staff ace Roy Halladay (6-3, 0.98 WHIP, 2.21 ERA) is on the mound against the Reds.  Cincinnati has struggled to a .235 average on the road this year and the Reds are hitting only .234 over their last 10 games.  The last two home starts for Halladay against the Reds were both complete game shutouts, including a no-hitter most recently.  Although the Reds have the power hitters to threaten in this smaller stadium, betting against Halladay to throw another 9-inning masterpiece isn’t a winning proposition.

That means that Cincinnati left-handed starter Travis Wood (3-3, 1.40 WHIP, 5.17 ERA) needs to be dominant as well, and he has a chance to do just that if he continues pitching like he has recently.  Wood has a 1.11 WHIP and 3.00 ERA over his last 3 starts and the Phillies are ice cold offensively lately, hitting just .205 over their last 10 games.  Philadelphia has struggled to hit lefties this season (.241 average), and Wood was Halladay-like in his only career start against the Phillies, going 9 innings in a shutout that saw him only allow a single hit.

Although Wood should have a nice enough outing, there is just no way I can go against Roy Halladay with the Reds hitting poorly in recent games.  Pittsburgh Pirates’ starter Charlie Morton has made no secret that he is trying to emulate Halladay’s stuff and approach this season, and the Reds were shutout over 9 innings against the youngster just over a week ago.  Now that they have to face the real deal, I just don’t see them scoring more than a run.
