Wednesday MLB Best Bet: Rockies vs. Mets

Carlos Gonzalez

We have the Rockies and Mets game as our Wednesday MLB best bet.

The Colorado Rockies (7-2) are on the road for their 7:10 PM ET game against the New York Mets (4-6), and this clash is perfect for our Wednesday MLB best bet.  Las Vegas sportsbooks have made the Mets a small betting favorite for today and most folks are putting money on the Rockies according to bet-tracking websites despite the fact that Colorado has won just 5 of their last 28 games on the road against this team.

Left-hander Jon Niese (0-1, 1.27 WHIP, 6.55 ERA) will take the mound for the Mets and he’s been up and down this season.  He dominated the Florida Marlins to start the year but then struggled badly when he drew a tough assignment in a road game against the Philadelphia Phillies.  Niese pitched against the Rockies twice last season, struggling at Coors Field but going 7 innings and only allowing a single run to score when he got to pitch at home.  The Rockies are only hitting .246 on the year and I feel that Niese has a good chance to have success here.

Colorado will counter with right-hander Esmil Rogers and the 25-year-old Dominican prospect has never gone up against the Mets.  He went to Pittsburgh to take on the Pirates in his season opener and looked sharp, but he also showed to be much too hittable during his 8 starts in the 2010 MLB season.  The Mets are hitting .249 on the year but don’t appear to have the offense to put up a huge amount of runs while some of the better hitting squads can do.

Ultimately, this game comes down to which starting pitcher I trust more and that would be Niese.  He should throw quality innings and I’ll back the Mets as small home favorites because it is tough to know what to expect of Rogers.  He was up-and-down last season and is still considered a bit too raw to be anything more than an average starter at this stage in his career.  Make your Wednesday MLB best bet on the Mets to get the win and you should have a bit more money in your pocket than you had when the day started.
